About The Event
We are joined by Drama and Movement Therapist, Lizzie Cummings to talk about the pillars of happiness.
Engaging in Happiness
Where and how can we find happiness and what does the word actually mean? This is an ancient question that eludes us the moment we try to pin it down. So with that in mind this talk will explore happiness as an ever shifting phenomenon that changes, transforms and means different things according to a person’s current life-style, emotional attitudes towards themselves and others and the degree to which they are willing to adapt and be open to new experiences. We will think about where we are stuck in life and where we flow and why. We will consider happiness not as a thing to get, but as a state of being in which to engage.
However, we cannot address happiness without its valuable counterpart: sadness. Otherwise we risk disappearing into an unreal euphoria that denies us the inevitable truth of human suffering. Paradoxically, suffering brings about its own possibility of deep social connection and potential healing. This too is a powerful source of happiness!
About Lizzie Cummings
Lizzie is a drama and movement therapist and has worked for the past 18 years in the NHS adult mental health sector, schools and private practice. For fun she sings in a jazz band, goes dancing and writes terrible poetry (for her eyes only!) She also likes trying out new recipes on her friends and is grateful for their – ahem – appreciation!
