HOW TO THINK ABOUT MONEY
‘Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons’ – Woody Allen
Money provokes a range of emotions, from the positive – security and comfort, to the negative – greed, selfishness, inequality. It’s often the case that our attitude towards money is shaped by our experiences in childhood. However, we live in a society that is obsessed with money - how much people have, what their possessions cost, what their houses are worth. In the media, the ‘wealthy’ are either idolised, envied or vilified. Books on business and investment are usually about becoming rich, becoming a millionaire. None of this is healthy!
In my talk I will go back to basics, reminding ourselves why money is important and useful, and throwing in some real life examples of peoples’ experiences with money, both good and bad. Perhaps we can re-define what it means to be ‘wealthy’. We’ll also look at some practical steps to take control of your finances, and some further reading, if you are interested!
More about Angus Aston
With 15+ years as a financial adviser, a keen interest in economics and prior stints in the City and as an impoverished photographer, I have a fair amount of experience, both personal and professional, to bring to the subject of money. It wasn’t always so – it was only in my late twenties that I realised the need to understand how to manage money, fortunately this was before I had any to fritter away! The more I learned, the more interested I became. However, my early experiences in financial advice led me to think that the industry was just about selling products, rather than looking after people over the long term. And then I came across Wise Investment.
