About The Event

Join our Abingdon group for an inspiring and thought-provoking talk by drama and movement therapist Lizzie Cummings.

Inviting play into your everyday life

Play is a serious matter indeed! Why? Because when you are playing you are in touch with

your spontaneity, your imagination and your creativity. These three things help you to

connect to yourself and others in profound and unexpected ways:

  • Spontaneity can free us from old and unhelpful patterns of behaviour
  • Imagination shows us paths that lead beyond our perceived limitations
  • Creativity encourages us to expand, grow and actually do the changes we want

Play enhances the emotional and practical quality of our everyday lives. It reminds us to listen to the wisdom of our inner child. However, we have often been told too soon to put away childish things, shamed into a false version of adulthood that says, “Take life seriously now and quit fooling around”. Yes, we can take life seriously but our ancient folk tales teach us that it is The Fool who keeps the King sane and connected to his people! In other words, playfulness keeps us in good mental health. It is the Great Enabler that allows us to try out new things, from small moments of playful intimacy to those dreamed about projects that

are collecting dust on the proverbial shelf! It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. But that is only the kickstarter. It is by playing around, trial and error, having a go, wondering, day-dreaming, imagining, that our scientists actually got us to the moon, our doctors find cures and our artists help us to understand what it is to be human.

In this talk Lizzie will be considering the nature of play, it’s purpose, it’s healing properties, it’s power, what holds us back and most important of all she will get you thinking about how to make play a part of your everyday life and feel the benefits.

About Lizzie Cummings

Lizzie is a drama and movement therapist and has worked for the past 18 years in the NHS adult mental health sector, schools and private practice. For fun she sings in a jazz band, goes dancing and writes terrible poetry (for her eyes only!) She also likes trying out new recipes on her friends and is grateful for their – ahem – appreciation!
